does this ‘L’ word make you more persuasive?
No… this ‘L’ word is not love.
Let me tell you a short story.
And you will see this ‘L’ word in action.
My girlfriend wanted to lose a few pounds.
She was going to the gym.
Working out 5 days a week.
But she had this urge to eat junk food.
So she wasn’t losing those pounds.
As a great boyfriend… I helped her a lot 🙂
Well not really.
She did all the hard work.
And I just did this 1 li’l thing.
I started calling her ‘my fit and sexy girl’ multiple times a day.
Especially before and after eating.
4-5 weeks later…
She told me…
She’s having a hard time eating junk.
Every time she sees junk…
she hears this inner voice ‘fit and sexy girl’.
And she tells herself… I am a fit and sexy girl.
I am NOT gonna eat that.
Does she still eat junk?
Yes. But like 80% less than before.
That’s a big win.
Would it work this easily on everyone?
No. Some people are more receptive than others.
Did you guess the ‘L’ word I am talking about?
It’s Labeling.
And it’s powerful.
Alice Tybout and Richard Yalch have done research on this.
Calling someone…
“above-average citizen likely to vote and participate in political events”
Gets the respondents to see themselves as a good citizen.
And they were 15 percent more likely to vote.
Labeling involves assigning a trait, attitude, belief, or other label to a person…
and then making a request of that person consistent with that label.
Good thing…
you can LABEL yourself too.
Instead of saying…
I write a few times.
Say… I am a writer.
I think you got the point.
Now you will see the ‘L’ word everywhere…
Especially on sales pages and sales calls (given the person knows what they are doing).
Just today I saw this on a sales page…
“This is a wild opportunity for growth-minded people who know they are worth the investment”
Use the ‘L’ word with good intentions.
Don’t start randomly manipulating people.
